Deathproof
LTQ kept on driving. He didn't want to stop and look at what he had done. He's killed another life--in attempt of self-defense, he once again convinced himself--and there was nothing he could do about it. Suddenly, he saw a limo that looked strangely familiar pulled over. No doubt, it was Minh Tuyet's. A man in uniform with huge sunglasses that covered most of his face stepped out. He had a gun with him.
LTQ hit the break and came out to check. The man in uniform stopped to take notice at the arrival of the nosy stranger.
"HEY! What are you doing- DAMN!" LTQ cried. An explosion deafened his ears temporarily. He turned around in shock to find his car exploded into pieces, and what left of it perished in flames. Bang Kieu was right. Someone really wanted them dead.
The man in uniform was just as surprised as he was. For several minutes they stood looking at each other in silence, not knowing what to do or say.
----------------------------------------
Minh Tuyet finally woke up due to the loud noises outside. She took a look around in attempt to recall where she was and what was happening. It all came back to her in a flash. The driver... where is he? Minh Tuyet thought. She peered outside the window and saw the figures of two man. It was dark outside but she managed to make out who they were. Minh Tuyet burst the door open and stepped outside.
"Quang! What are you doing here?" She screamed at the top of her lungs in a very unloving manner.
The two man turned around to look at her. The fake driver changed his facial expression and point his gun at Minh Tuyet. LTQ started to run toward him trying to get hold of the gun.
"BAM!" The noise pierced through the silent and coldness of an early winter evening. LTQ starred at Minh Tuyet, expecting to see her falling down. To his relief, she didn't. It was the fake driver who fell down. They both looked around to see where the bullet that killed him came from. There was no one around but a white car slowly rolling down the road. It finally came to a halt and a man came out.
"You guys okay?" He asked.
LTQ and Minh Tuyet exchanged looks of confusion. No one answered the question.
"Oh, I forgot to introduce. People call me D, I'm DTV's men. You guys can trust me."
Really. Minh Tuyet wanted to say. It was impossible to know who to trust now.
"Well, anyways," he continued, "DTV told me to drive you guys back to his place. Come."
LTQ and Minh Tuyet spent another moment exchanging looks. They really didn't know what to do.
LTQ: So?
Minh Tuyet: I don't drive limos.
LTQ: Huh?
Minh Tuyet didn't bother to explain or say any more. She walked toward the white car and got inside. LTQ had no choice but to follow her.
--------------------------
It was a long way driving back to DTV's mansion, so D decided to use the time to explain what was going on.
"Jack's shooting was scheduled on the day you guys left for Korea. We thought that was it. But no, several days later we recieved news that Andy, Jack's son, managed to break out of prison. Then not long after that, the entire police department buidling was blown up. Everything and everyone was destroyed. No one surivived. All paperwork, evidences, files, etc... are gone. There can't be anyone but Jack who would dare do this in Mason City. But then, Jack's dead. We had no idea what was going on. The bomber wasn't caught. Andy's still nowhere to be found..."
"But what does that have to do with us?" Minh Tuyet interrupted.
"Well, we never thought of it until Bang Kieu called two days ago, from Korea. He asked for DTV's protection once you guys get back to Mason City, because someone's after him and his friends. Then he asked if Jack had escaped prison, because he had a feeling Jack was behind all this. The only enemy he had alive, who was also you guys' enemy, was Jack. Think about it, the day after he was executed, all these strange events happened. It makes you wonder if Jack is really dead or he had come back to haunt us all. But all this time, we've forgotten one very important detail--no one was there to confirm Jack's death. Now it make some sense, doesn't it?"
"No." LTQ and Minh Tuyet replied in unison.
"Okay, let me break it down. Mike, the only police officer who dare stand up to Jack, died several days before Jack's shooting-"
"What?! He's dead? How come we never hear anything about it?"
"His body was never found until a week later of his death, and you guys were already in Korea by that time. Nasty stuff. Anyways, when there's no one else to stand up to Jack, he can do whatever he wants, right? Surely, Mike had wiped out half of the corrupted cops in the department but there are still some. Jack could've hired people to set up his execution to make it look like he's dead. Then he hired people to get his son out and blow up the department, wiping out all traces and records of himself. Finally, he just needed a new identity."
"In other words, Jack is back? And he's trying to kill us?"
"I'm afraid so."
